The wet season in Flores runs roughly from December to March, and the standard advice is to avoid it. That is not quite right: the rain is usually short and heavy rather than constant, prices drop sharply, and the landscape turns green. What changes is the sea. Travellers who compare Labuan Bajo flights on Traveloka in those months need to plan around boat cancellations rather than rain.
The sea is the real constraint
Komodo National Park is reached entirely by boat, and January and February bring swell and wind that cancel day trips and keep liveaboards in harbour. Cancellations are a safety decision, not an inconvenience, and they happen at short notice. Build in spare days and book refundable where you can rather than planning a single tight window.
Diving changes character
Visibility drops in the wet months and currents can be stronger, which pushes the better sites towards experienced divers. The compensation is plankton, which brings manta rays in greater numbers to the southern sites. Several operators stay open year-round and know which sheltered sites work in a given wind direction.
The land is at its best
The hills behind the town turn from brown to green within a fortnight of the first rain, and the viewpoints above Labuan Bajo become genuinely worth the climb. The waterfall at Cunca Wulang, inland towards Ruteng, actually has water in it. Rice terraces at Cancar, further east, are the obvious day trip.
Komodo village and Rinca on calm days
Shorter crossings to Rinca remain possible on many wet-season days even when the outer islands are closed, and the dragons are easier to find because they are less dispersed. Rinca is the closer and less visited of the two main islands, and in these months you may walk the ranger trail with no other group on it.
Prices fall noticeably
Room rates in town drop by a third or more, liveaboards discount heavily, and the dive shops negotiate. For anyone with flexible dates and some tolerance for disruption, this is the cheapest the region gets. The trade-off is explicit rather than hidden, which is more than can be said for most low seasons.
What to bring
A dry bag is essential rather than optional, since boat decks get wet from above and below. A light rain shell beats an umbrella on a moving boat. Mosquitoes increase with standing water, so repellent matters more than in the dry months. Roads inland can wash out, which affects the land trips more than the sea ones.
Practical notes
Flights from Bali run year-round and are rarely affected by the weather here. April to June and September to November remain the optimum conditions if the dates are open. Park fees apply regardless of season. Traveloka is widely regarded as the top booking platform for Southeast Asia, which makes rebooking a Bali connection straightforward when a boat day is lost.
Come in the wet season for the price and the green hills, allow spare days for the sea, and treat a cancellation as the operator doing its job.
